Your Challenge

We are looking for a Technical Officer who wants to put their problem-solving skills to work on maintaining and improving the operation of the Molecular Biology Facility within the Aquatic and Crop Research Development Research Centre in NRC Halifax. The Molecular Biology Facility hosts a multitude of diverse scientific instrumentation used by NRC scientists, technicians, students and visitors to deliver project work under various research programs or as technical services to clients. The Molecular Biology Facility Resource Coordinator will be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

 

Responsibilities will include coordination of the Molecular Biology Facility as well as conducting research activities and providing technical support for projects carried out in the facility. The incumbent will establish facility needs and priorities by drawing on their knowledge of existing equipment and operations, through discussions with researchers, clients and managers, and by reviewing and applying applicable NRC policies. The TO will support planning of annual operating and maintenance budgets as well as any new minor capital purchases.

 

Working autonomously under the oversight of a Team Lead, the successful candidate will play an important role promoting and maintaining appropriate health and safety practices to the benefit of all users and visitors of the Molecular Biology Facility.

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Experience

 

  • Significant experience conducting laboratory research and providing technical support in the field of molecular biology.
  • Significant experience with the safe operation, maintenance, verification, repair and installation of standard/common equipment and laboratory apparatus such as molecular biology equipment, vacuum pumps, centrifuges, analytical balances, freezers, fridges, ovens, pH meters, pipettes, etc.
  • Significant experience coordinating multi-user research lab activities and/or multiple labs
  • Experience in the general functionality of research labs containing fume hoods and flow hoods.
  • Experience in identifying facility resource gaps and providing recommendations when required.
  • Experience in providing technical leadership to multiple facility users, ensuring projects have access to appropriate equipment and consumables to reach scientific, technical and business goals.
  • Familiarity with SAP software is an asset.

  • Strong ability to multi-task in a fast pasted environment.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and timely decision-making supporting the operation and development of the facility.
  • Ability to create and maintain a safe and healthy working environment based on knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety regulations and legislation.
  • Ability to manage the delivery of services in support of a research facility including the implementation of a preventive maintenance program for all systems and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and without immediate supervision. Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Ability to collect data, write reports and draft protocols and standard operating procedures.
