Position Overview

The Department of Surgery in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

The Research Coordinator will be supporting the project entitled, 'Preparing to Survive': Improving outcomes for young women with breast cancer project. Preparing to survive is a Canadian Cancer Society/CIHR funded project aimed at improving the understanding of the psychosocial needs of young women diagnosed with breast cancer and developing an online intervention self-management tool to support them through their diagnosis, during and after treatment and into survivorship.

 

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for the coordination and administration of 'Preparing to survive' and other related projects as assigned
  • Undertake research tasks relating to 'Preparing to survive' and related projects including undertaking semi-structured interviews with young women with breast cancer and clinicians, write and develop content for the online self-management tool, liaise and co-ordinate work with the tool developers, organize meetings of the research team, co-ordinate focus groups related to the project, carry out testing of the self-management tool and liaise with study partner organizations in the undertaking of a controlled registry trial of the developed tool
  • Recruitment activities for the Reducing the Burden of Breast Cancer in Young Women (RUBY Study) for the Calgary and other sites as assigned
  • Work collaboratively with the members of the SPHERE program and provide assistance and support to SPHERE projects as needed
  • Submit ethics applications, renewals and modifications for 'Preparing to Survive' and other projects as directed
  • In collaboration with the Principal Investigator, develop the structure, objectives, and policies of the research project, evaluating research activities and recommending improvements when appropriate
  • Monitor research funding and budgeting resources, collaborating with the Principal Investigator and Research Accounting
  • Develop project timelines, monitor and control of project deadlines and outcomes, and closeout of projects
  • Provide research support, produce reports, and administer research policies and procedures
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator and research team in areas of analytics and reporting, in the development of documents and proposals for the purpose of presentation and publication
  • Contributes to and assists in submitting research grant proposals, may be required to act on behalf of the Principal Investigator to granting agencies, or other internal or external agencies

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in a health-related discipline
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Epidemiology, Community Health Studies, Health Technology or Health Informatics would be considered an asset
  • Minimum of 3 years related experience in either research co-ordination and/or direct experience with cancer patients and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of qualitative research methodologies
  • Strong writing skills
  • Experience in health technology would be considered an asset
  • Ability to communicate with sensitivity and empathy with the study participants
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of research policies and procedures
  • Ability to plan and direct research and administrative activities within a team environment
  • Ability to provide support to other members of the team and related units or teams
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of research ethics and regulations for granting agencies (e.g. Tri Council) and experience in managing the ethics approval process
  • Demonstrated proficiency in budgeting, resource planning and grant applications
  • Demonstrated ability in professional writing, preparing reports and conducting literature reviews for the purpose of presentation and publication
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
