Position Overview

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 24 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The main aim will be to help conduct functional MRI (fMRI) experiments as well as analyzing fMRI and EEG data. Data recorded in the MRI and also during routine EEG investigations will have to be analyzed by the Research Assistant. It will be the responsibility of the position to program basic data analysis applications as well as apply already existing programs on new data sets.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Conduct fMRI experiments independently and safely in the MRI scanner.  Troubleshoot problems that occur during the scan session and subsequently process the recorded data
  • Perform analysis of EEG and MRI data followings the instructions of the supervisor. Interpret results and find mistakes in the analysis if necessary. Adapt existing programs to new datasets and perform analysis independently. An example would be an automatic detection tool for EEG events, or a protocol to remove artifacts from an EEG caused by the MRI scanner
  • Communicate with the different disciplinary teams involved in a project as well as with subject and patients to schedule experiments
  • Perform literature review on a specific question to enable the PI to get a quick overview over a research topic and thus adapt a research project accordingly
  • Order and process payments in the university billing system after a short introduction by the PI
  • Conduct literature reviews, surveys, laboratory experiments and other research for use in scholarly publications as required

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum 2 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • Solid knowledge in programming with MATLAB
  • Knowledge on EEG and MRI data analysis is preferred
  • Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice or guidance on technical issues
  • Provide semi-skilled to skilled technical procedures to support the research project
  • Basic knowledge about the ethical principles of research and on the process of preparing and supporting a Research Ethics Board submission
  • Ability to carry out literature reviews
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Basic knowledge about accounting for research projects and University core business systems is desirable
