Primary Purpose:  The research will determine if glycosylated hemoglobin (hemoglobin A1c) is associated with 3-year declines in hearing among a population-based sample of adults participating in the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA; clsa-elcv.ca). The importance of the research is underscored by the high prevalence of diabetes and hearing loss in Canada and worldwide. The results will inform public health efforts to reduce the burden of diabetes and hearing loss and improve the health of older adults.

The study is part of a broader research programme that aims to study sensory and cognitive aging, and links to health, wellbeing and social participation. Four of the supervisors (Mick, Pichora-Fuller, Phillips, and Wittich) are researchers in the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging ( http://www.opto.umontreal.ca/wittichlab/ccna-team17/) while the fifth (Jones) is an endocrinologist and community health researcher. The opportunity is funded by a grant from the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine and Sonova International ( https://www.sonova.com/en#our-vision).

The position will consist of interactions with team experts who have a broad base of expertise and are located across the country, and students and a research analyst based at the University of Saskatchewan. The experience will include interdisciplinary networking through teleconferencing and in-person meetings.
