Primary Purpose: We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to work on an untargeted/targeted metabolomics project, focusing on identifying disease biomarkers for respiratory illness. Urine is used as the biological matrix and analytical mass spectrometry is utilized as the discovery platform. The successful candidate will expand their knowledge in both untargeted and targeted metabolomics workflows and data analysis. They will also expand their knowledge regarding utilizing basic science strategies to answer clinical research questions that impact patient health.

Nature of Work: Design experiments, process and analyze urine samples for both discovery and targeted analysis. The candidate will use state of the art liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) technologies, including quadrupole-orbitrap and quadrupole-linear ion trap instruments.  The successful candidate will also employ statistical analysis and use relevant software such as Compound Discoverer for data analysis and processing.

The successful candidate will work with basic scientists (Drs. Anas El-Aneed and Randy Purves) and clinician scientist (Dr. Darryl Adamko)

Typical Duties or Accountabilities: Major duties include:

  • Conduct literature search and synthesize knowledge
  • Plan and execute research experiments
  • Collect and analyze mass spectrometric data
  • Perform statistical analysis for biomarker discovery
  • Prepare reports, research conference posters and peer-reviewed publications
  • Attend meeting and present data

Education: Ph.D. in health, chemistry, biochemistry or related life or health sciences with mass spectrometric data acquisition and analysis experience.

Experience: The successful candidate must have experience in:

  • Using LC-MS/MS instrumentation, preferably for “omics”-related applications
  • Performing statistical analysis for complex mass spectrometric data to identify biomarkers
  • Knowledge in sample derivatization for MS analysis is an asset

Skills: The successful candidate should be able to develop and troubleshoot analytical methods using LC-MS. Significant knowledge in statistical analysis within the “omics” sphere is expected. The candidate should have the ability to work independently or collaboratively and meet deadlines.

To Apply:

  • Interested applicants must include the following in their application: cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a statement of research experience (one page).
  • Apply online or send your application to Dr. Anas El-Aneed:
  • Candidates who are eligible for applying to external postdoctoral federal funding, such as NSERC and CIHR are preferred.
  • Obtaining and maintaining a security clearance that is necessary to access instrumentation housed at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (Canadian government laboratory) is a condition of employment.
  • We thank all candidates who apply but only those who are shortlisted will be contacted to arrange for an interview.
